Being a Google fan, it is hard for me to let go. But like most bloggers who did, my primary motivation for doing so is the lack of categories in Blogger. Blogger publishes to static html files, I think that makes it difficult to implement the said feature. I believe this is also the reason that publishing often takes a long time in Blogger. Wordpress on the other hand publishes your blog posts to a database, hence there’s no need to refresh static pages, mostly everything in Wordpress is dynamic.
Some people are also cautious of switching because of the claimed google bias. It’s not a concern of mine at this point and the benefits further outweighs the disadvantage. Wordpress has far more features that appeals to me.
The transition is not without its challenges. The 1st challenge is moving my previous posts from Blogger. Fortunately, this has already been covered before.
Another bump is I’ve noticed that my <pre> elements are not displayed properly. Searching through the support forums, I stumbled into this item which pointed out the problem and a suggested solution. The solution however, is not flawless and still problematic for me on some situations. Alas, a great advantage of OSS is that you can fix anything that doesn’t work for you and hack away…

How come your blog site is not chiliblog.wordpress.com? How were you able to do away with the wordpress.com? Sorry if my question is a bit amateur, I’m not really of a web developer.

If the user does not have his own website, he could use the free service provided by wordpress.com to create his own wordpress blog. However, since I have a website lying around with php and mysql support, I could install wordpress and customize any way I want.
Aside from the advantage of choosing the domain name, having your own install of wordpress has some additional advantage: You can install any plugins for wordpress that you want; or customize the code for special needs.
On the other hand, at wordpress.com, you don’t have to worry about installation.

Currently, wordpress.com has serious limitations in terms of tweakability:

However, that may change soon:
